Current Student Enrolment and Geographical Location
The Matau Cluster of schools are located Hurungwe District, in the Northwest of Zimbabwe. The nearest town is Karoi, approximately 75km away. The schools offer day schooling and are owned by the central government. There are 12 schools in the cluster with total enrolment of approximately 6,400 (March 2021).
Nutrition
Malnutrition, lack of clean water and poor sanitation are some of the leading causes of scholastic underachievement among rural children. Unfortunately many students attend school hungry and rely on water from unprotected wells and rivers. The TTI Foundation is developing a much needed School Nutrition program, by constructing a school canteen and installing clean water sources, so that educational outcomes and livelihoods are improved.
The TTI Foundation’s school breakfast and lunch program is part of an integrated response to end child hunger and under nutrition among school children. We work with each school to establish a school garden that supplies the school canteen with fresh vegetables. The school vegetable garden is irrigated by water from reliable water well. Local small-scale farmers provide corn and other produce in support of the nutrition program.
MATAU PRIMARY SCHOOL CANTEEN PROJECT
The Rotary Club of Salinas has already generously donated $64,000 to equip the canteen. In order to sustain the canteen, we need to keep the school garden going. Please consider joining us on this journey to access good nutrition for all the kids at Matau.

THE MATAU SUN BAKERY PROJECT
The Matau Sun Bakery is a commercial solar oven designed for large-scale feeding situations that require baking great volumes of bread quickly. The Sun Bakery is capable of saving over 150 tons of wood annually which results in the reduction of tons of CO2 green house gas emissions as well as the cutting of firewood for energy.
While the Matau Sun Bakery is intended to run as a for-profit bakery out of the Matau Primary School Canteen, however, some of the bakery products will feed of 1,700 students each day. Once the bread is produced using the sun’s energy, it is immediately fed to the school children during breakfast and lunch. This is a much needed service for the many school children that walk up to several kilometers each way, generally on empty stomachs and generally after doing their morning chores, to attend school
Improved Learning
Investment in solar energy is one of the best options for providing electricity in Zimbabwe today. While a few of our schools have access to a few shared computers, electricity continues to be scarce and unreliable. Electricity is needed not only to power computers at our schools, but also for lights and other basic instruction equipment.
Providing our schools with solar energy will give students an enhanced learning environment, including access to online learning programs to prepare them for today’s modern world. Also, by providing scholarships to girls while increasing their computer literacy, they will be more likely to provide a better future for themselves and their families.
The Matau Solar Energy Project has been established to install solar panels at our schools in order to address the educational challenges outlined. This strategy will boost computer literacy, enable post-secondary students to advance their education, and allow rural girls who may be struggling to go to school to continue their education at any level.
Water & Sanitation
Access to safe and clean water is a basic human need, and yet most of rural African school children drink from unprotected wells and rivers. Studies have indicated that 80% of ailments in most developing countries originate from water-borne diseases because of lack of access to clean water supplies. Access to clean water also frees children from walking long distances carrying heavy containers, and allows them extra time to spend on their studies
Clean Water
Together with the local governments and our partner, Save the Children, we have installed a borehole (well) for clean water, new latrines, and a hand washing station to improve Matau primary school sanitation. The vision is to provide water storage tanks at each school. The tanks hold approximately 5,000 liters of clean and safe drinking water for both the school and the community.
Sanitation
TTI Foundation promotes proper school sanitation by building toilets at each school. With funding from Oprah Winfrey, two blocks of toilets with 20 squat holes (2 toilet blocks with 10 squat holes in each) were constructed at the Matau Primary School.
