In Zimbabwe, due to historical inequities that have shaped the poor, many rural girls are married before the age of 18 and 5% are married before their 15th birthday. In the rural areas where our Foundation works, child marriage is exacerbated by poverty. Underage girls from the poorest households are more likely to drop out of school than their urban peers because their parents cannot afford to pay school fees, which in turn puts rural girls at a higher risk of marrying young. Without education, many rural girls marry early just as their mothers and grandmothers did before them, perpetuating the cycle.
